Onions in Ukraine are rapidly becoming more expensive: what affects the price.

Noticeable increase in onion prices: reasons and consequences
The Ukrainian population was explained why the cost of onions has significantly increased in 2024.
According to the head of the marketing department of the agricultural wholesale market "Shuvar" Tetyana Popovych, at the Lviv wholesale market "Shuvar", the price of onions has significantly increased. If a year ago, a kilogram of onions cost 10.5 hryvnias, now its price is 14.5 hryvnias. The reasons for this 38% increase lie in several factors.
The first reason is the poor harvest caused by unfavorable weather conditions. A combination of heat and insufficient rain negatively affected onion cultivation. The rise in the cost of materials such as fertilizers, fuel, and electricity also impacted the price of onions. The costs of growing the product increased. The conflict situation in the country also exacerbated the situation by increasing the costs of delivery and storage of products.
There is also a noted reduction in sown areas due to economic uncertainty. Some farmers have shifted their focus to other crops due to the uncertain market situation.
Despite the price increase, onion consumption in Ukraine has not decreased, as it is necessary for preparing many national dishes. However, with the rising price, people began to economize by purchasing foreign onions or lower-quality products.
Experts predict that in the near future, the price of onions may continue to increase due to a shortage of domestic goods on the market. The situation will improve only in the spring when farmers can harvest a new crop. In addition, prices for sunflower oil, bread, and lard have also risen in Ukraine.
