History of the Holiday
The first settlers from England arrived in America in 1620 and founded the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts. They learned to grow various crops, which resulted in a rich harvest.
In 1621, the first Thanksgiving took place, dedicated to giving thanks to God for a successful harvest. From that moment on, the colonists began to celebrate Thanksgiving.
In 1941, the US Congress established Thanksgiving as a national holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November.
Thanksgiving Traditions
On this day, family, friends, and loved ones gather around a large table. Everyone is supposed to express words of gratitude for all the good that has happened in their lives or over the past year.
Turkey is an important attribute of the holiday. It is prepared and served along with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie.
In New York, a parade organized by Macy's department store takes place. The parade is shown on television, featuring large inflatable toys.
Traditionally, the President of the United States conducts a turkey pardon ceremony at the White House.
This day is celebrated with family, which is also joyously embraced in countries that consider the holiday a family affair.
