The representative Sylvester Turner has died, reported colleagues from the Democratic Party and his office.
This Texas Democrat was elected in 2024 to the position that became vacant after the death of the Democrats' Sheila Jackson Lee.
Democrats announced his death to colleagues at a closed leadership meeting on Wednesday morning, according to three individuals familiar with the situation.
Later on Wednesday, his office released a statement, sadly announcing his death.
'Congressman Turner was survived by his loving family, dedicated staff, and many friends who appreciated his wisdom, humor, and unwavering commitment to public service,' the statement from his office said.
Other Democrats publicly expressed their condolences on X, notably Representative from Alabama, Terri Sewell wrote: 'He will leave behind an extraordinary legacy of service as Mayor of Houston and representative for Texas' 18th Congressional District. May he rest in peace.'
The representative from Turner's office in Congress did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
According to Texas law, it is up to Republican Governor Greg Abbott to conduct special elections, but there is no deadline for this. If Abbott calls for special elections, all candidates will be included on the primary ballot, and the two most successful in the primaries will move on to a runoff if neither receives more than 50 percent of the votes.
Turner was 70 years old. In 2022, he openly admitted that he underwent treatment for bone cancer, though he referred to himself as 'cancer-free.'
Thanks to Andrew Howard for preparing the report.
