UN Secretary-General calls for expansion of the Security Council
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called for the expansion of the UN Security Council. He noted that the organization should reflect the modern world, not the world of the last century.
Diplomats also noted that the UN has strayed from its core missions and needs reform. US Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, stated that the UN should work on establishing and promoting peace, rather than supporting the initiatives of individual countries.
UK Representative to the UN, Barbara Woodward, added that the organization is not fulfilling its founding mission of saving future generations from the scourge of war. She noted the necessity to expand the UN Security Council and improve its functioning to ensure international peace and security.
Ukraine is also actively supporting the need to reform the UN Security Council, in particular, seeking ways to punish permanent members of the Council for aggressive wars.
