The actual extent of damage during the Second World War

Historian and people's deputy Volodymyr Vyatrovych points out that often in Germany it is believed that Russia was the most affected country during the Second World War. However, in reality, the largest human losses were borne by Ukraine, and its industrial potential was almost completely destroyed.

«A misunderstanding of history leads to wrong political assessments. Take Germany, for example. It was from German politicians that statements originated that Russia suffered too much during the Second World War to now provide Ukraine with weapons to counter it. But, damn it, if we talk about the number of dead, about the number of destroyed cities and villages, and about the volume of destroyed industrial resources, then it is Ukraine that is the most affected participant in the war! But this is all being capitalized by Russia», – explained the historian.

He also emphasized the need to establish an alternative to the Russian celebration of May 9, suggesting to do this on May 8.

Manipulations and myths about the Second World War

Historian Oleksandr Alfiyev explained that the claim that victory in the war was won thanks to the bravery of Russians is a manipulation of facts. He reminded that in fact, the BSSR (now Belarus) felt the largest losses among all Soviet republics. Russia provided the largest number of Red Army soldiers, however, in percentage terms, Ukraine and Belarus provided almost the same numbers.
